Vegan Charlotte, NC seems to be having a BLT moment. The tasty late-summer sandwich is turning up everywhere! We at VegCharlotte decided to share our top three favorites so you can add to your late summer bucket list.
Deli Street BLT (Plaza-Midwood)

Deli Street has the most classic, traditional version. Order the Wembley BLT ($7.99) off the breakfast menu for a sandwich featuring Lightlife Foods vegan bacon, lettuce, tomatoes, house made vegan mayo and S&P. Or order the Vegan BLT ($9.99) off the lunch menu, which is the same BLT plus avocado and smoked gouda “cheese.” @delistclt makes these simple sandwiches work by using quality ingredients, and a lot of them – no limp lettuce or skinny pale pink tomato slices here!
Living Kitchen BLT (South End)- CLOSED 1/15/2024

Our next must-try Charlotte BLT, from @living_kitchen is exactly the BLT you’d expect from an upscale vegan cafe. Smoky eggplant bacon, ripe tomato, avocado, mixed greens, and – surprise – chipotle cashew aioli, which adds zing and zest. Should the eggplant bacon get soft, as eggplant bacon sometimes does, there’s still plenty of crunch in the toasted, seeded bread. Pairs perfectly with the Caeser salad, which has mushroom bacon bits and hemp seed parmesan. (Note: Usually the salad is tossed in the dressing and looks a little different, but I guess the dressing wanted a few moments of internet fame.) $13.50.
Plant Joy YLT (Camp North End) – CLOSED 10/2023

The “YLT” is probably the most creative vegan BLT in Charlotte! (But what else do we expect from Plant Joy?) Comes with grilled (not toasted) sourdough bread, fresh lettuce, local heirloom tomatoes, and … warmed yam planks! Believe it or not, the smoky and salty yams do make an excellent substitute for bacon! Finally, the slight sweetness of the yams is balanced out with a spicy cajun mayo that packs a little heat!
This is a seasonal sandwich @plant_joy_clt. Once the summer heirloom tomatoes are gone – it’s gone. $12.00.
