Life is short, and colonoscopy prep is NOT for whole food vegans … so break out the good china and just celebrate you’re alive and kicking!

Pictured: Celestial Seasonings Jammin’ Lemon Ginger Herbal Tea; “Cheerios” (only Rice Krispies, Corn Flakes, and Cheerios allowed – no whole grains/high fiber cereals); canned peaches (most fruits not allowed).

Ehh … it’s only 3 days, right?

Where Does A Vegan Get Protein On A Colonoscopy Prep Diet?

Great question! Beans, legumes, and peas (including hummus) are not allowed. Nuts and seeds (including quinoa) are not allowed. Whole grains are not allowed. Protein bars – nope, as they may have nuts, dried fruits, and dreaded F.I.B.E.R. Protein drinks seem like they could be an option but only non-vegan ones have been vetted for use.

Remaining choices? Tofu (but not with veggies). And – thank God – creamy peanut butter! A PBJ (on white bread – ugh) and glass of almond milk was my lunch for 3 days.

Vegan Colonoscopy Prep – Don’t Eat The Rainbow, Eat YELLOW!

Yup, colors not allowed on the prep. No leafy greens. No veggies except for potatoes without skins, asparagus tips, cooked carrots, and canned green beans. (Odd because green beans have seeds, which are a no-no.) Fresh fruits are cantaloupe, honeydew, bananas, and avocados. Canned fruits are applesauce and peaches.

Pictured: Cantaloupe, canned peaches, and Annie’s vegan boxed mac and cheese with added nooch. Coldplay might love all this yellow stuff, but I didn’t. Take a look at the pic below – cantaloupe, Annie’s vegan boxed shells and sauce, and ginger ale – to see how using your fancy dishes makes this slightly more palatable.

Dr. Approved Chocolate

Now, the strange part. You can’t eat leafy greens, most fresh fruit, or most vegetables, but you CAN eat as much chocolate (and other sweets) as you want – as long as there are no nuts or fruit.

We’re talking candy, cookies, cake, ice cream. Oatmeal raisin cookies are a no, but chocolate chip cookies are a yes. Angel food cake is a yes, but Christmas fruitcake is a no. Cherry Garcia ice cream is a no – but Chocolate Fudge Brownie is a yes.

Final Day Of Prep

The “clear liquids day” is the day most people dread, but to me it was a relief. Going from a high-protein, high-fiber diet to a diet of mostly refined carbs took its toll on me. I lost my usual zip and zest. My sensitive facial skin became red and irritated and the arthritis in my right knee flared up. I was constipated. Yes, that’s right – a constipated vegan! Taking a break from the refined carbs and sticking to clear liquids and popsicles felt great.

As for the laxatives – it makes no sense to eat a diet almost guaranteed to make you constipated, just to use major strength laxatives to blast everything out. However, it did feel good to move my bowels.

Day Of

You won’t remember much about the colonoscopy. Afterwards, you can eat anything you want (although they recommend sticking to a clear liquid diet the rest of the day).

Final Tips

Read over your instructions as soon as the doctor gives them to you and start making a plan.

It’s probably easiest (and cheapest) to have roughly the same thing for breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day.

Expect to have a small financial outlay as you’ll need to purchase items you likely don’t have at home. (For me, it was an approved cereal, white bread, applesauce, canned peaches, Annie’s Mac n Cheese, white grape juice, popsicles, ginger ale, Sprite, Gatorade, and the laxatives.)

You may want to research a few recipes. These orange ginger glazed carrots (cooked very soft, with powdered, not fresh, ginger) could be an option. You could go old-school and make your own macaroni and cheese with a nooch sauce (remember, no nuts!) You could make plain scrambled tofu (without veggies) or baked tofu. Or you could just keep things extremely simple, as I did.

Life is short. Eat the chocolate and use the good china.

  1. Wow…this is a bit disheartening…
But I suppose it must be done

    1. The idea is to have no fiber in your system which could be mistaken for a lesion. It’s now recommended everyone 45+ have one done, and some doctors may recommend one earlier. But if yours is OK, you can go as long as 10 years before having another, or choose a less invasive method. Thanks for reading and when you have it done, keep reminding yourself it’s only for a few days.

  2. Thank you for posting this. I was very confused as to what I may be able to eat. Hitting my doc wirh the list you suggested and appreciate people like you putting it out there for those of us who are trying to make a plan.

    1. Awww, thank you! Let me know what your doctor advises.

  3. Is almond milk allowed, or do we have to stick with a nut-free milk like oat milk?

Also — if I do my own juicing, can I put anything in it since everything becomes liquid?

    1. My nutritionist told me that oat milk has too much fiber

      1. Thanks for the input! My list did show almond milk and soy milk, but no other plant milks. My doc and his nurse were just confused when I asked about it.

    2. My nutritionist told me that oat milk has too much fiber

    3. I was told almond milk and soy milk were allowed – confusing, I know, since that’s nuts and beans. You just can’t drink it on your “clear liquid” day the day before your colonscopy.

As for juicing, I’d ask your doctor (and please let me know what he/she says). My thought is that since juicing eliminates the fiber, it should be ok (but I’m not a medical professional). I know I was told most smoothies weren’t good because they retained all the fiber, even if the blender did “chew” it up.

  4. Hi, thanks for this. Is Nutritional Yeast considered a vitamin supplement? I’m thinking of tofu scrambles with it but cannot find it on any “Yes” list

    1. It depends on whether the nutritional yeast is fortified. If so, then it might be considered a vitamin supplement. There are several brands that aren’t fortified, though.

  5. Thank you so much for making me laugh in the middle of this crazy eating poorly process!! I knew some other vegan out there was also saying, this makes no sense. Clear liquid day tomorrow for me.
After a sad dinner, you made my night! Laughed so hard I couldn’t see through the tears as I read your post to my husband and daughter.

    1. Sorry, I’m just now seeing this! I hope your colonoscopy went well!

And thank you so much for taking the time to write and giving me feedback! Glad I gave you a good laugh! Your kind words just made MY night! 🙂

FYI, I’m planning to make some changes to my blog this year – one is focusing on problems and situations (like colonoscopies) that (ahem) older vegans face. So stayed tuned! 🙂

  6. Strangely my doctor does not give instructions for a low residue diet in the days in advance of a colonoscopy, he only gives instructions for the liquid diet day the day before the prep. The last time I did the prep for a colonoscopy, I’m a whole food plant based vegan, I must have had so much fiber in me that it took until just hours before the procedure for it all to come out. In fact I was worried that my colon wouldn’t be clear enough for the procedure (as mentioned, I still was eliminating some solids only hours before the procedure, where others I’ve spoken to who have had the same prep were only passing clear liquid). I have a VERY slow digestive system and the thought of the low residue diet scares me that it will lead to constipation just prior to the prep day, which seems counter productive. My plan this time around is to do a low fibre juice diet multiple days prior to the prep day to clear my bowels of any bulk and fibre. It’ll be interesting to see how this will work.

    1. Wish I’d had your doctor!

And you’re right – the low fiber diet did cause constipation and an overall feeling of general yuckiness.

Good luck with your colonoscopy and please check back and let us know how the juice diet worked.

  7. […] almost didn’t post Vegan Colonoscopy Prep because I thought no one would be interested. Surprise! It is my top post from the past 3 years, […]
