Recently, I had a surprise delivered to me from Mocktail Mom – Better Than Booze Elderberry G&T!

Immediately, I was intrigued. Most canned mocktails seem to be of the “you can do this at home, kids” variety. I mean, how easy is it to make a mocktail mule (a strong ginger beer with lime juice)?

But I rarely see gin and tonic mocktails. If you want an alcohol-free gin and tonic, typically you have to purchase a bottle of AF gin and make it yourself.

Elderberry is, similarly, an unusual flavor in the mocktail biz – although elderberry or elderflower is frequently paired with “real” gin.

The mocktail did not disappoint. I loved the elderberry with its sweet, tart, grape/berry taste. It was fizzy but not too fizzy. About the same amount of fizz as a “real” gin and tonic. There was a hint of gin. You would never mistake this for an alcohol drink, but it is tasty and refreshing with an “adult” feel. It feels like a treat, not like you are sipping on flavored carbonated water.

I added just a drop of lime juice which gave it some “bite” and brought out the gin taste. It’s not necessary, especially if you like sweet drinks. I just personally prefer my mocktails to be slightly astringent.

Better than Booze is made in Nashville, TN. In addition to a lineup of spirit free mocktails, they also have a line of CBD/THC infused drinks. In Charlotte, you can find some of their offerings at The Common Market Plaza Midwood.

Is it vegan? Why, yes, it is! And proudly so. It’s also gluten free, 100% alcohol free, and only 60 calories. (All of Better than Booze’s flavors are 90 calories or less.)

Have you tried Better Than Booze? What did you think?
