Prince Harry Holds A Grudge

Life is not complete without an orange cat.

Prince Harry is an old cat, at minimum 15 years old and maybe as old as 17. He’s always been the best boy, a very social, responsible little guy. He took care of all the other rescues (including canines) – groomed them, kept them in line.

And he is only JUST NOW – almost a year later! – forgiving me for being away two months in the hospital.

Granted, he is a rescue with abandonment issues. I went to the doctor one morning, never dreaming I wouldn’t be coming back home again for two months. I didn’t leave out multiple litterboxes and food and water dispensers, or sprinkle toys and catnip around the house for him to find. I didn’t have anyone coming over to spend quality time with him.

I didn’t tell him goodbye.

Let me tell you, at Christmas it is almost impossible to find someone last minute to care for your cats. My friend would go by and give them food, but with everything else he was doing for me, there was no time to give Harry love. I even considered trying to contact a rescue to see if they could be fostered for a few weeks. All of this was pretty hard to do hooked up to a dozen tubes and drips in a hospital bed.

I thought I had someone helping me search, but later when I re-read my text messages I found my “Angel of Death” had actually been contacting rescues to try to find PERMANENT PLACEMENT for Prince Harry and Baby Meghan!

I wanted to sign myself out of the hospital and go home, but – not surprisingly – that did not fly.

So Prince Harry was all alone when his sister, Baby Meghan, unexpectedly died.

Prince Harry had not been alone for years. He’d always had at least a furry sibling or two (or three, or four), and a permanent place on my bed.

I was shocked when I finally came home and saw him. He’d gone from a loving, smooshy chonk full of purrs to a skinny, grumpy old man. He yodeled and yowled and complained constantly. He knocked things off shelves and tables and counter tops just to do it and was totally unrepentant when something broke. If he wasn’t fussing or cussing, he ignored me.

Prince Harry also went on hunger strikes unless I gave him EXACTLY the food he wanted. Churros, any flavor. SOME brands and flavors of PATE only (no “meaty shreds”). Canned tuna and chicken meant for humans – but ONLY certain brands. Cold cuts, but ONLY specific flavors, torn into a specific size (approximately 1″ x .5″).

Some days, he’d eat a handful of Temptations cat treats – other days, he wouldn’t.

They say time heals all wounds – or at least takes the edge off.

Recently he started eating cat kibble again and MOST brands/flavors of pate.

And he’s recently started hanging out in the same room fairly close to me. He’s even sleeping in his spot on my bed again – when I’m not in it.

Here are some selfies of us. As you can see, I’m thrilled to be reunited with my oldest baby, but he is still holding a wee bit of a grudge.

“I do not know this woman.”

“I will show her what it feels like to be ignored.”

“Put me down! Put me down! HELP!!!”

“There had better be at least 2 Churros after this. She had better also fluff up my pillow and turn my space heater up a notch.”

  1. I’m sorry that Prince Harry had to go through this and that you were unable to find a temporary foster home for them.

I pray that you are feeling better these days and have had a total and complete recovery.
