Pros: Great atmosphere and service. Cons: Not a lot of options for vegans and vegetarians. However, we don’t always get to choose where we eat, and if you find yourself at Leroy’s you do have some options.
It’s been exciting to watch the evolution of Fern, Flavors from the Garden! Fern has new-ish management (Susan Walley), a new Executive Chef (Matt Martin), and a new seasonal menu coming October 2nd!
Bombay Grille Cuisine of India is a delightful surprise for vegetarians and especially vegans. It has a large selection of vegetarian entrees and appetizers (many of which are vegan) and waiters that know exactly how the food is prepared.
At first glance, 1900 Mexican Grill seems to be trying to appeal to their veggie customers. Unfortunately, this restaurant doesn’t have a clue.
Zada Jane’s Corner Cafe (located in a former dry cleaners on Central Avenue in Charlotte, NC) is one of those bright, funky, Southern-style, breakfast-all-day places, similar to The Flying Biscuit or Tupelo Honey. Similar, but not the same. Zada Janes has far, far more vegetarian and vegan offerings than the Charlotte Tupelo Honey. In fact,… Read More ›
Tupelo Honey is a rock star of a restaurant, one of those that inspires a cult following. The original is located in Asheville (vegan and vegetarian capital of North Carolina) and offers “Nuveau Southern cuisine.” (Their misspelling, not mine.) Tupelo Honey has seven locations in North Carolina and Tennessee, two cookbooks, and a huge reputation… Read More ›
Sometimes, somewhere, some place when I least expect it … I have an unexpectedly wonderful vegan dining experience! Most recently that happened at the Treetops Cafe at the Doubletree Hotel by Hilton – Charlotte Airport. I was taking a two-day financial seminar at the hotel. The first day of the seminar was gray, cold, and… Read More ›
Understand, when I do a restaurant review, I do it from a veg (and mostly vegan) point of view. That means, a place like Saffron (2135-B, Ayrsley Town Boulevard, Charlotte, NC) might have the best goat biryani in the world, but I’m not interested. That’s not what I’m reporting on. I’m judging and reporting on the… Read More ›
Maharani is, without question, my favorite Indian restaurant in Charlotte. I admit I’m prejudiced. Maharani is where I had my first date with my partner … on September 21, 2009. And, Maharani was my re-introduction to Indian food. Charlotte, until recently, was not very diverse. Growing up, there was only one Indian restaurant in Charlotte,… Read More ›
Today, members of VegCharlotte Meetup Group checked out Bean Vegan Cuisine’s new Brunch Menu. Formerly, Bean had offered a weekly Sunday Brunch “special” … now, they have a Brunch Menu available all day on Sundays. (You can still order off their regular menu, however, if you would rather have a hamburger.) I ordered the Bean… Read More ›
How in the world do two vegans wind up in a place like Buca di Beppo? For those that aren’t familiar with Buca di Beppo, it’s an American chain restaurant serving “fresh, authentic Italian food – family style.” Of course, it’s really only America’s idea of “authentic Italian food” – if everyone in Italy really… Read More ›
First of all, let me say I am well aware that many restaurants do not cater to vegetarians or vegans. And I am also aware that sometimes, I have to eat at one of those places. Because it’s a work function or because it’s someone’s birthday/baby shower/going away party and they (rightly) get to choose… Read More ›
It’s so cool that Charlotte, NC is now big enough to have several veggie restaurants … each with their own distinct personality! There’s Bean Vegan Cuisine – down home Southern cooking in a diner-type atmosphere. Zizi’s – soul food deli takeout. Luna’s Living Kitchen – exquisite raw vegan food. Berrybrook Farm – homey, healthy sandwiches… Read More ›
The Thai category received more responses than any other restaurant category in the 2013 VegCharlotte Awards– with some voters offering a second, and even third, Thai choice. I suppose it shouldn’t be that surprising – Thai food is notoriously vegan-friendly, and Charlotte, NC seems to have more of its fair share of Thai restaurants – from… Read More ›
I haven’t tried ALL the Thai restaurants in Charlotte yet – I’m still working on that! – but I believe I have found my new favorite! Monsoon. I’ve always heard mixed reviews about Monsoon, but I’ve been curious to try it – especially since voters rated it so highly in the 2013 VegCharlotte Awards. Upon arrival,… Read More ›
